Choisir Advances His Stakes Tally to 98

Mark Smith - Saturday December 12

Living his life out in contented retirement, the great Choisir has not finished adding to his list of stakes winners just yet, his latest coming with the admirably honest Usmanov in Saturday’s Listed Sky Racing Bribie Handicap (1000m) at Eagle Farm.

The Toby and Trent Edmonds-trained Usmanov became the 98th stakes-winner for Choisir when he held off the fast-finishing Boomtown Lass (Spirit Of Boom) by a half-head in a driving finish. The leader Sugar Boom (Spirit Of Boom) was three-quarter of a length back in third.

A $350,000 purchase by Aquis/Blue Sky BS (FBAA)/Toby Edmonds from the Segenhoe Stud draft at the 2017 Gold Coast Yearling Sale, Usmanov advances his record to seven wins, four seconds and two thirds from 19 starts with earnings of $314,900.

Usmanov was a $350,000 Magic Millions yearling

I’m rapped because this is my favourite horse. It means a bit, and he has won a stakes race, fantastic,” Trent Edmonds said.

“We had his mother, and she was a good galloper, and I think we have got three of her first four foals.

“He is the first one, and we paid a bit of money for him. He won on debut, and we thought he was going to go to some lofty heights, but he is just getting going now.

“He is a cool dude. Segenhoe raced his mother, and they are great supporters of the stable.”

Choisir closing in on a century of stakes winners

A half-brother to Ruuca (Rubick), Usmanov is out of the Redoute’s Choice mare Mining Tycoon.

A $375,000 Easter Yearling, Mining Tycoon is a half-sister to triple Group 1 winner Bentley Biscuit (Peintre Celebre) from the famed Denise’s Joy family.

Mining Tycoon has a 2yo Lonhro colt who was purchased by China Horse Club for $460,000 at the 2020 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale. Named Broken Hil he has been sent to Michael, Wayne and John Hawkes at Rosehill.

After missing in 2018, mining Tycoon foaled a Ruick colt on August 29.

Choisir has 11 entries for the Magic Million and five catalogued for the Inglis Classic.
