No 2020 Partner for Winx

Tara Madgwick - Wednesday December 9

2020 has been a challenging year for most people and also for our champion racemare Winx, who tragically lost her first foal earlier in the spring with the decision now made for her not to be covered again this year.

A pregnant Winx pictured earlier this year, will now enjoy a year off from breeding..

Winx is being given plenty of time to convalesce following her ordeal and her ownership group will now wait until 2021 to choose another stallion for her.

Winx is not the first champion mare to encounter problems at stud.

2007 Australian Horse of the Year, Miss Andretti produced just one living foal in her first five seasons at stud and only three more since, all of them colts and has not had a foal since 2017. Two of her colts, Mr Hamilton and Mr Raikkonen have raced and won.

2010 Australian Horse of the Year Typhoon Tracy died following the birth of her first and only foal, a Street Cry (IRE) colt called Last Typhoon, who won two races and stands at stud in Victoria.

1986 Australian Horse of the Year Bounding Away did not produce a live foal until her fourth season at stud and only ever produced one more, the Group II winner In a Bound.
