New Group One Winner for Medaglia D’Oro

Tara Madgwick - Tuesday September 5
One of the few top class North American sires to enjoy ongoing success as a sire in Australia, Darley's Medaglia D'Oro (USA) was making news in the US this week when siring his fifth Group I winner of the year.

Two year-old colt Bolt d'Oro made his stakes debut a winning one as he rallied from far back to take the Group I Del Mar Futurity by three-quarters of a length.

Medaglia D'OroAllowed to settle near the rear of the field through the early stages of the race, the two-year-old began a wide, sweeping move on the far turn, closing stoutly on the leaders. As the field hit the top of the stretch, Bolt d'Oro was up to challenge for the lead, then battled with Zatter through the stretch before pulling away late for a three-quarter victory in the seven furlong contest.

Bred in Kentucky by WinStar Farm LLC, Bolt d'Oro was purchased by owner-trainer Mick Ruis for $630,000 at the 2016 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga August Yearling Sale.

A half-brother to stakes-winner Sonic Mule, he is from AP Indy mare Globe Trot, who comes from the family of Group I winner Zensational.

Bolt d'Oro is the fifth Group I winner of the year for Medaglia d'Oro in North America joining Dickinson, New Money Honey, Elate and his recently retired champion Songbird.

A proven sire of Group I winners in Australia in Vancouver and Astern, Medaglia d'Oro will stand the 2017 breeding season at Kelvinside for a fee of $110,000.

His yearlings sold for up to $2.4 million (pictured below the colt from Hoss Amor) in Australia this year highlighting the keen commercial demand for his progeny.
