Four Years Beween Drinks, Lord Von Costa Chalks Up His Second Stakes Win

Mark Smith - Saturday July 4

Four years after capturing the Listed A.R. Creswick Stakes (1200m) at Flemington, Lord Von Costa earned his second stakes success in Saturday’s Victorian Sprint Final over the same track and distance.

The 7yo son of Von Costa de Hero has seen quite a bit of scenery over the years. His first stakes win came for Stephen Brown but he has been a resident at the stables of Graham Hulm, John Sargent, David and Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig, and Albury-based Donna Scott, the daughter of  Graham Hulm, who has put the polish on him over the past two years.

Back on Lord Von Costa for the first time since the Creswick Stakes, Craig Williams guided Lord Von Costa to defeat Great Again (Viscount) by a neck with the million dollar Magnus gelding Malibu Style another short-neck back in third.

Donna Scott was not on the track but she tweeted the $1.3 million The Kosciuszko (1200m) at Randwick in November is in her sights.

The lightly races, injury plagued, gelding advances his record to 4 wins, 8 seconds and 2 thirds from 20 starts with earnings of $397,380.

The homebred is the second foal of twice winning Dash For Cash mare Cashed Up Lady a half-sister to the dams of dual Listed stakes-winner and Magic Millions 2yo Classic runner-up Paprika (General Nediym) and the Group III winner Streetcar Magic (Blevic).

Cashed Up Lady had just four foals before her death in 2017.

Her final foal is the unraced 2yo Magnus filly Our Last Cash.

Winner of the Group II VRC Sires' Produce Stakes and runner-up in the Group 1 STC Golden Slipper and Group 1VRC Australian Guineas in addition to finishing third in the Group 1 MRC Caulfield Guineas, Von Costa De Hero began his career at Darley Stud but the son of Encosta de Lago now stands at Riverbank Farm where he covered 16 mares last spring at a fee of $2,200.
