Blue Collar Super Ex Holds Off the Bluebloods at Randwick

Mark Smith - Saturday September 2

John Ramsay needed just $5,000 to take home the broodmare Superb Lady at the 2016 Magic Millions Broodmare Sale and the foal she was carrying at the time, Super Ex, led home the $1,600,000 Frankel colt Merovee and Godolphin's blue-blooded Street Cry colt Beau Geste, who is out of a $1,150,000 mare, in Saturday's ANZ Bloodstock News Hcp (1300m) at Randwick.

It was the third consecutive win for the Mark Newnham-trained colt.

With Hugh Bowman in the saddle, Super Ex made all the running to hold off the fast finishing Merovee by a short-neck with Beau Geste three-quarter of a length back in third.

A son of the now Queensland based stallion Excites, Super Ex was sent to the 2016 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale by Turangga Farm where he was purchased by Storm Creek $40,000.

He was re-offered at the Magic Millions Gold Coast 2YOs In Training Sale later that year with the Macau Jockey Club signing the ticket at $105,000.

"It goes back to my days when I rode in Macau, Newnham told AAP.

"The owner's horses are managed by one of the trainers there, Joe Lau.

"Joe put me in touch with the owner, it's been a fruitful start for us.

"It's a very good buy now, he's beaten a good quality field of colts."

The 3yo colt will target the $2 million 3YO Magic Millions Guineas (1400m) on the Gold Coast in January.

"He's eligible for Magic Millions so if he's going to have a break before then he's probably going to have to have it pretty soon."

While Super Lady made just $5,000 the price more reflected her age rather than what she had achieved.

Placed in the Group I Flight Stakes and Group II Wakeful Stakes, the daughter of Canny Lad is a half-sister to Group I AJC Sires' Produce Stakes winner Align.

When she went through the sale ring, Superb Lady was carrying her 11th live foal.

She had nine winners from her 10 to race, which included the top-class Fritz's Princess (More Than Ready (USA), the winner of the Group II AJC Shorts and placed in the Group I Galaxy and Group I Winter Stakes.

Superb Lady has a 2yo colt by Testa Rossa named Hoges. She missed to Testa Rossa in 2015 and visited the Vinery Stud veteran again last spring.

After seven years at Vinery Stud, Excites (pictured) moved to Springfields Stud where he stood for a fee of $4,400 (inc gst) last spring.

The son of Danewin is a half-brother to Duporth and the now China-based Tickets.
