Couldn't Find a Buyer at $2,750 - Runson Closes in on Half a Million

Mark Smith - Monday March 9

At the ripe old age of seven, the Leon and Troy Corstens-trained Runson rang up number one in a stakes race for the first time in Monday’s Listed Matrice Stakes (1200m) at Morphettville.

A second consecutive winner of the race for John Allen, Runson jumped to the front and led at every call to defeat Amberdi  (Ambidexter) by a short-neck with Beautiful Flyer (Solo Flyer) a neck back in third.

The son of Delzao was winning for the first time since October 2018.

“Back to the home state it’s nice to get a winner, Troy Corstens said.

“The team at home have done a magnificent job. He’s a horse that has had two operations.

“It’s no secret he had a lung infection at the end of last preparation. We really wanted to get him right and back on track.”

Bred and part-owned by Janet Gaist and Peter Harris of Manner Lodge Thoroughbreds, Runson could not make his paltry $2,500 at the 2013 Great Southern Weanling Sale.

All’s well that ends well as the son of Delzao advances his record to 10 wins 4 seconds and 3 thirds from 38 starts with earnings of $447,300.

He is the best of four winners from as many to race out of the good-class Last Tycoon mare Runs On Dreams a Sydney winner of four races and a sister to the Group III BATC Coca-Cola Classic and GCTC Magic Millions 2YO Classic runner-up Flying Tycoon.

Runs On Dreams has a 2yo Fighting Sun filly named Runsir and was covered by Lean Mean Machine last spring.

Runson becomes the first stakes winner for Encosta de Lago’s Group II MVRC John F Feehan Stakes winner Delzao.
