G1 Win for Sun Bred Barney Roy

Media Release - Sunday March 8

2017 Group 1 St James Palace winner BARNEY ROY has tasted success at the highest level once more with victory in the Group 1 Jebel Hatta at Meydan in Dubai overnight..

The Sun Stud bred galloper races for the Godolphin operation and was handled by William Buick for Charlie Appleby.

Settled towards the rear of the field in the 1800m contest, the son of Excelebration produced a brilliant run down the centre of the track to record a comfortable 1.75L win.

BARNEY ROY was retired to stud in 2018, however returned to the track as a gelding after fertility issues in 2019. This was his third victory since his renaissance as a racehorse.

The six-year-old is a $4.50 second favourite behind Japanese superstar Almond Eye for the Group 1 Dubai Turf (1800m) on March 28.

Sun Stud sold Barney Roy as a weanling for 30,000gns, however his exploits have ensured the offspring of his Sun owned dam, Alina (by Galileo), would be in high demand - subsequently selling her Kodiac filly for 400,000gns in 2017 and a Dubawi colt for a sale topping 3.6 million gns to Godolphin in 2019.

Both Alina and her retained daughter, Wisdom Mind (by Dark Angel) - a winner and stakes placed mare, have tested first scan positive to Dubawi from February 2020 covers.

Exciting times ahead for Sun Stud's European portfolio!
