Foxwedge Colt Surprises in Sires Produce

Mark Smith - Saturday March 7

After taking four starts to break his maiden at Ballarat at his most recent start, the Foxwedge colt Lunar Fox went back to back in Saturday’s Group II MSS Security VRC Sires' Produce Stakes (1400m) at Flemington.Lunar Fox image Grant Courtney

While it was a tough watch for those on the favourite Ole Kirk, Bret Prebble enjoyed a trouble-free run on Lunar Fox who went to the line strongly to defeat the Brazen Beau colt Larimer Street by three-quarter of a length with a nose back to the Written Tycoon colt Ole Kirk who only saw daylight in the final 50 metres.

It was a second win in the race for trainer Terry O'Sullivan who now trains alongside his daughter Karina.

O’Sullivan and Prebble teamed up to win the race in 2003 when it was a Group 1.

“It’s wonderful, he’s my old boss, he started me, he made me, my son Thomas is strapping so there’s no better feeling,” Prebble said.

“He’s a smart horse we just needed him to Brett and Thomas Prebble - image Grant Courtneyget up to 1400 metres. I rode him a bit more cautiously today and he gave me a good turn of foot although he still gets a bit lost and he was pulling up on the line, he had a fair bit left. He’s a proper horse.”

A three-time veteran of the sales ring, Lunar Fox could not find a buyer as a weanling at the Great Southern Sale, as a yearling at the Inglis Premier Yearling Sale before TKO Racing shelled out $40,000 at the Melbourne Gold Yearling Sale where he was consigned by Kelly Thoroughbreds.

He is the best of two winners out of the stakes-winning import Grant’s Moon (USA) (Malibu Moon).

Grant's Moon (USA) has a yearling filly by Holler and a filly foal by Frosted (USA).

Lunar Fox becomes the 16thy stakes-winner for Foxwedge who began his career at Newgate Farm and now stands at Woodside Park where his fee in 2019 was advertised at $16,500.
