Impressive Debut Winner for Pride of Dubai

Tara Madgwick - Tuesday February 25

A homebred for Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Maktoum, as was her dual Group I winning sire Pride of Dubai, two year-old filly Maha made a winning debut at Bendigo on Tuesday.

Trained by Tony and Calvin McEvoy, Maha began quickly and raced fiercely before settling in front and was tenacious to the line to win the 1000 metre dash by a neck in 57.66 seconds.

She’s certainly bred to go fast being from the all-conquering Black Caviar family.

Foaled at Coolmore as was her sire, Maha is the fourth winner for Pride of DubaiFoaled at Coolmore, Maha is the first foal of unraced Fastnet Rock mare Makrooma, a half-sister to stakes-winner Glad and to the dam of stakes-winner Exuberant, her dam McHappy being a half-sister to Group II winner Scandinavia.

The descendants of Scandinavia include World Champion Sprinter Black Caviar, Champion 3YO All Too Hard, Group I winner and Group I sire Magnus as well as this season’s stakes-winning 2YO’s Ole Kirk and Hanseatic, who was second in the Group I MRC Blue Diamond Stakes.

Makrooma was covered again last spring by Pride of Dubai, who is the leading Australian first season sire by earnings with Maha his fourth individual winner (three in Australia and one in New Zealand).

His stocks may well rise further at the weekend with his two stakes-placed fillies Bella Nipotina and Dubai Star both entered for stakes races on Saturday.

Pride of Dubai has a top class draft for the Inglis Premier Yearling Sale with 19 yearlings to be offered at Oaklands and you can see them here.

What Stallions Can Step Up in Hong Kong?
The Hong Kong racing season is over for another year, so a look at their sire tables by earnings and winners is always interesting and there is no surprise at the top with now pensioned Deep Field claiming his fourth consecutive champion sire title, but given he is now out of the picture the big question is what sires will replace him?
