Regally-Bred Deep Impact Colt Breaks His Maiden

Mark Smith - Friday February 14

Making just his second start, the regally-bred Deep Impact colt Impactful broke his maiden over 1550 metres at Canterbury on Friday, which has proved timely for Arrowfield Stud who will consign his half-brother by Not A Single Doubt to the upcoming Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale as Lot 44.

Impactful had been well-schooled with six barrier trials before making his debut over 1400 metres on the Kensington track at Randwick on February 5.

He did not have a lot of luck on that occasion when a fast-closing fourth, beaten just on three-quarters of a length, behind the winner Sea Of Life.

It was looking grim again for the Chris Waller-trained colt on Friday as Brenton Avdulla was searching for a split at the 200 metres but when he saw daylight the son of Deep Impact hit the line strongly suggesting a step up in distance would be beneficial.

The winner’s well-supported stablemate Dancing Gidget (Al Maher) was a long-neck back in second with Strange Charm (Casino Prince) a head back in third.

Raced by a group of high-profile industry stalwarts including his breeders Arrowfield Stud and Jonathon Munz’s Pinecliff Racing, Impactful is the first foal of the Listed CRC Black Opal Stakes winner Lucky Raquie who is a sister to Group III winner Precious Lorraine and a three-quarter sister to Manhattan Rain, Rubick and Echoes Of Heaven.

It could be a double celebration for the family on the weekend with Precious Lorraine’s daughter Meuse (Snitzel) among the favoured runners for Saturday’s Group III The Vanity at Flemington.

Lucky Raquie has a 2yo filly by Snitzel that was purchased by Dean Hawthorne Bloodstock for $1 million at the 2019 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.

In the pipeline after this year’s Easter entrant by Not A Single Doubt, is a filly foal by I Am Invincible and Lucky Raquie was one of 167 mares to visit the 5-time Group 1 winner The Autumn Sun (Redoute’s Choice) at Arrowfield Stud last year.
