Pegus, 37, has ridden just under 1000 winners in a long career in Victoria and South Australia.

His best win was on Shadoways in the 2008 Group One Goodwood in Adelaide.

Pegus will ride at Cairns on Friday and is then expected to be on some of Currie's horses at Toowoomba on Saturday night.

Currie said he met Pegus a couple of years ago through mutual friends and they had kept in touch.

"We recently had a chat about him moving up here. He came up and rode work for us about three weeks ago," Currie said.

"I am keen to expand my stable and it would be ideal to have an experienced jockey who can ride them work and then in the city.

"I am keen to have more metropolitan runners on both Saturdays and midweek.

"There is a chance Mark can ride some for us at Doomben or the Gold Coast on Saturday."

Currie said former New Zealand apprentice Rebecca Goldsbury had joined his stable and lightweight jockey Josh Oliver would continue to do a lot of his riding.

"Rebecca rode four winners at Toowoomba two weeks ago and she is going for a city licence so she can claim three kilograms in town," he said.

Currie won the 2016/17 Queensland premiership with 103 winners and has had 10 winners since the new season started on August 1.
