I Am Immortal to Stand at Swettenham Stud

Media Release - Saturday February 8

Multiple stakes winning 2YO and autumn Group One sprint contender, I AM IMMORTAL, will stand at Victoria’s Swettenham Stud in 2020.

I Am Immortal - image Grant CourtneyA only son of all-conquering I Am Invincible to win multiple stakes races as a 2yo, I Am Immortal led throughout to capture the Listed Blue Diamond Preview at Caulfield when making his debut on Australia Day last year, notably defeating subsequent Group One ATC Sires’ Produce winner and Group One Golden Slipper runner-up, Microphone: the only colt to defeat Microphone as a 2YO.

Raced by Dream Thoroughbreds and trained by Anthony Freedman, who saddled up last year’s Group One Blue Diamond winning filly, Lyre, I Am Immortal would also capture the Group Three Blue Diamond Prelude at his next start.

Resuming in the Listed WJ Adams Stakes at Caulfield on 1 February, I Am Immortal was pipped by $1.5 million earner and 5-time stakes winner, Jungle Edge, but will now be aimed at Group One glory in the Oakleigh Plate.

“I Am Immortal was a very fast, precious 2YO … easily one of the fastest horses that I have trained,” Anthony Freedman reveals. “He’s an imposing, attractive colt, very much in the mould of his sire, I Am Invincible, and races in a similar manner. I believe with all his attributes he is an exciting stallion prospect.”

I Am Immortal is one of 50 stakes winners for Australia's best stallion, I Am Invincible, who has had 21 yearlings sell for a million dollars plus in the last four years.

“We have been so fortunate to race such an athletic I Am Invincible colt, especially one out of Ad Valorem’s Group Two winner, Meliora” Dream Thoroughbreds’ David Azzopardi points out. “Talk about speed on speed … I remember Meliora leading them for home by a whopping margin in the (Group Two) Angus Armanasco before she ended up winning the race by nearly four lengths. Meliora is also a half sister to the dual stakes winning sprinter, Whypeeo (I Am Invincible)."

“The WJ Adams was I Am Immortal’s first tilt at Listed open age class and showed blistering speed, so we’re really looking to the remainder of the autumn.

“The opportunity to stand I Am Immortal with one of Victoria’s most successful farms in Swettenham Stud is fantastic and I believe he will be the ideal Super VOBIS stallion – sure to get early 2YOs that train on at three and four.”

Although the majority of I Am Invincible’s sire sons don’t have progeny of racing age, his Group One winning sprinter, Brazen Beau is off to a ‘flyer’ with runners including Group winners Colada, Pretty Brazen and Sartorial Splendour, while his yearlings sold up to $1,150,000 last year.

“We’re thrilled to be standing such a quality son of I Am Invincible,” Swettenham Stud’s Adam Sangster enthuses. “I Am Immortal will be the perfect barn mate for Toronado who was Victoria's most popular stallion last spring, covering 197 mares, while Puissance de Lune (156 mares) and Akeed Mofeed (133) were busy with their biggest books too.

“The addition of such genuine precocity to the roster with I Am Immortal really does, if you’ll excuse the pun, cover all breeding requirements. He complements our roster so well and really aligns to what our breeders are looking for.”

I Am Immortal’s service fee will be announced after Easter, while limited shares are also available as he enters his stud career.
