One to Watch – Bendigo

Tara Madgwick - Wednesday February 5

The famed Shadwell colours were carried to an easy debut victory at Bendigo on Wednesday by this homebred daughter of the late Sebring.

Trained at Lindsay Park by the Hayes Dabernig team, Surooj was unwanted in the market, but made it look all too easy when she swept to the front and kept on going to win the 1100metre maiden by a length and a half.

Sebring is the sire of Surooj“She’s up there with our better two year-olds although we see her more as a 1400 to a mile filly, so a Sires Produce race might be more suitable,” said stable representative Russell Treloar.

Foaled and raised at Yarraman Park for Shadwell, Surooj is the second winner from Group III winning Redoute’s Choice mare Shaaheq, who was also second in the Group I MRC Blue Diamond Stakes.

Shaaheq has a yearling colt by I Am invincible, a weanling colt by Written Tycoon and went to Spirit of Boom last spring.
