One To Watch - Kembla Grange

Mark Smith - Tuesday January 7

A breathtaking last to first performance by the royally-bred Deep Impact colt Miyake in a 1500 metre maiden at Kembla Grange on Tuesday certainly makes him one to watch.

The Chris Waller-trained 3yo has taken a bit of time finding his feet. He was making his fourth start on Tuesday after three unplaced efforts but he gave every indication he will improve when stretched out in distance. He has been a bit of a regular in stewards reports in his short career to date with problems ranging from Cardiac Arrhythmia to suspension due to racing manners but the ability is there.

Settled back last of the 11 starters by Mitchell Bell, Miyake was eased out to the centre of the track to make his run and came with a barnstorming finish to defeat Luvoir (Deep Field) by a length and a half with the winner’s stablemate Rules Don't Apply (Dissident) a further three-quarters of a length back in third. How much for colt by Deep Impact out of the stakes-winning Redoute's Choice mare Honesty Prevails

Racing in the colours of his breeder, Arrowfield Stud, Miyake is the first foal of the Group III MRC Ladies Day Vase winner and Group 1 SAJC Schweppes Oaks runner-up Star Fashion.

Purchased for $330,000 by Apollo Ng at the 2012 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, Star Fashion is a daughter of Street Cry (IRE) out of that wonderful racemare Elegant Fashion (Danewin) who won a trio of Group II races in Australia, VRC AV Kewney Stakes, MRC Angus Armanasco Stakes and Moonee Valley Oaks, and the Hong Kong Derby at Sha Tin.

Elegant Fashion is a granddaughter of The Queen’s French Oaks and English One Thousand Guineas heroine Highclere who is also the granddam of Deep Impact’s dam Wind In Her Hair.

Arrowfield Stud will offer the only Deep Impact to sell at the Magic Millions. He is a colt out of the Group III ATC Widden Stakes winner Honesty Prevails.
