ROSEHILL – Greg Polson

MARSUPIAL – This Godolphin three-year-old was well supported on Saturday but couldn't reel in Tango Rain. Marsupial settled about four-lengths from the lead working home strongly to get within a length of the winner and there is little doubt his run ended short of the line. Marsupial recorded two sub-11 second splits from the 600m to the 200m so it was no surprise that he couldn't maintain the surge to the winning post. With the run under his belt Marsupial will take a power of beating next start. Off a benchmark rating of 71, James Cummings has plenty of options in the weeks ahead. A race like the Heritage Stakes (1100m) at Randwick on September 16 would look an ideal early target for Marsupial but connections may well be tempted to have a shot at the Run To The Rose at Rosehill in a fortnight. Career statistics (5:1-1-0).

MOONEE VALLEY – Cameron Happ

MERRIEST – She may have let her supporters down a touch on Saturday but she certainly did enough to be worth following in the right races throughout the spring. She trialled in outstanding shape cruising along out in front at Cranbourne recently and it's no surprise she didn't win on Saturday as she's a mare that has tended to need her fresh run to find her best. She still ran a solid race covering ground, improving four deep on the turn and she only ran out of condition over the last 100 metres with the 1200 metres proving too far first-up. She's won two from three second-up and her best form is in hard run races over 1100 metres, if they can find the right race for her at her next start she'll be super tough to beat and she can train on through the spring. Career statistics (12:3-0-2).

GOLD COAST – Graeme Carey

ITALIA BELLA – Maiden filly that showed plenty of promise last preparation placing twice in Black-Type company. She resumed well in what was probably the best quality race of the day given they ran the 1100m in just a tick outside the track record and substantially faster than the Open Handicap. Damian Browne let her find her feet early but pushed her along from the 600m and she kept up a good gallop all the way to be beaten just over two lengths by two smart ones in Whypeeo and Shogun Sun. She will be improved by the outing, will enjoy a longer journey up to 1400m and whilst a maiden is hers for the taking can clearly go on to better things. Career statistics (4:0-1-2).

MORPHETTVILLE – Heath Pope

MAZESTIC – John MacMillon-trained filly that produced an encouraging debut when charging home late against a moderate tempo with an interrupted run to the line. It should prove a good race as the winner indicated plenty of promise when it had no luck in Listed company last campaign. Mazestic went around big odds and she will have taken plenty of benefit from the experience and gives every indication she is looking for longer than last Saturday's 1100m. She's a likely big improver next time she steps out. Career statistics (1:0-1-0).

BELMONT – Aaron Mills

FIRST AFFAIR – This stoutly-bred mare relished the return to drier conditions to make good steady ground through the line after settling at the tail of the field. She's a winner of five races so knows how to get the job done and will be at or near her peak third-up when next she steps out. The influence of master conditioner Adam Durrant after more than a year away from training should also start to show over the coming weeks and First Affair can be one of the first to benefit. Career record (20:5-1-2).
