Alamosa's Tinkermosa Toughs It Out in Belle Of The Turf

Mark Smith - Friday December 27

After winning the Group III ATC Summer Cup with Luvaluva at Randwick on Boxing Day, trainer John Sargent was back in the winner’s circle at Gosford on Friday when the outsider Tinkermosa did best in a driving finish to the Group III Belle Of The Turf Stakes (1600m).

At her most recent start the 5yo daughter of Alamosa pulled up with cardiac arrhythmia when tailed off over 1350 metres at Rosehill.

With Jeff Penza in the saddle, Tinkermosa defeated Statuesquely (Medaglia d’Oro) by a short-neck with Saas Fee (All Too Hard) one and a quarter lengths back in third.

Penza said he was confident after riding her in a recent barrier trial.

Tinkermosa wins the Belle of the Turf - image Steve Hart “She was really good. I go a long way back with this mare, I rode her back when she won her maiden,” Penza said.

“The pace was on and when she found her rhythm she finished the race off nicely.

“She was made to trial and she went as well as she ever had and I was happy to be on her today.

Purchased by her trainer for $50,000 from the Wellfield Lodge draft at the 2016 NZB Select Yearling Sale, Tinkermosa advances her record to 5 wins, 4 seconds and 3 thirds from 23 starts with earnings of $274,240.

She is the best of five winners from as many to race out of the Giant’s Causeway (USA) mare Tinkerbabu who is a half-sister to the Group II MRC St George Stakes winner La Rocket (Rock Of Gibraltar) out of the top-class La Bella Dama (Desert Sun) whose 7 wins were highlighted by the Group 1 VRC LKS Mackinnon Stakes.

Tinkerbabu has a 2yo filly by Alamosa and was covered by Vesper last year.

Tinkermosa becomes the 16th stakes-winner for Wellfield Lodge’s 4-time Group 1 winner Alamosa (O’Reilly).
