$1,100 Gavelhouse Purchase a Christmas winner

Media Release - Monday December 23

Jenna Mahoney’s $1,000 gavelhouse.com weanling buy Opalescence (NZ) (Showcasing) built on her promising debut second last month to go one better at Awapuni on Saturday.

Opalescence“I actually sent her down South to spilt my two-year-olds up as it’s a little less competitive down there but she goes really well, people have asked me how I got her so cheap,” Mahoney commented.

Starting in barrier four over the 1100m trip, Opalescence began quickly and found cover to settle second on the rail to which she stuck for the entire trip. In-form hoop Sam Collet timed their run to perfection and Opalescence had her rivals covered with the final margin a half-length.

“We were confident going into the race and thought she would go well fresh up,” offered Mahoney.

“She will improve lots from that run and looking forward we will aim for a race at Wellington in mid-January, then if she goes well in the New Year we will look to bring her North.”
