Juvenile Trial Watch – Canterbury

Tara Madgwick - Monday December 23

A busy set of barrier trials at Canterbury on Monday morning produced some interesting winners including youngsters from Group I winners Red Tracer and Our Egyptain Raine, plus a three-quarter brother to dual Group I winner Stratum Star.

Cellsabeel as a yearlingHinchinbrook filly Cellsabeel has been to the races once finishing fourth to Dame Giselle in the $1million Golden Gift after drawing wide and doing plenty wrong.

Ridden by Tommy Berry here, the Ciaron Maher and David Eustace trained filly she settled back in the field and covered ground around the turn sweeping up out wide to power clear for an easy win with ears pricked.

A $400,000 Inglis Easter purchase for Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Maktoum from the Cressfield draft, Cellsabeel is a half-sister to multiple Group III winner and $1.5 million earner Egyptian Symbol from Group I winner Our Egyptian Raine. She was the most expensive yearling by her sire sold at that sale.

Also trained by Ciaron Maher and David Eustace and ridden by Tommy Berry was expensive Redoute’s choice colt Prague, a $1.6million Magic Millions purchase for Phoenix T'Breds (II) Ltd/Aquis Farms Pty Ltd from the Bhima Thoroughbreds draft.

Prague as a yearlingPrague was having his first public outing and was a touch slow away from the outside gate in the field of seven, settling last before zooming home under a hold to win by a neck over fast finisher Distinctive Glory.

Prague is a three-quarter brother to $2.5 million earner Stratum Star from Purely Spectacular, who has had four to race all winners with Prague looking likely to follow suit.

He was the most expensive yearling by his sire sold at the Gold Coast in 2019.

Winning the next heat was striking chestnut Sebring colt Overlord, who was retained by his breeders Geoff and Mary Grimish, who raced his mother Red Tracer.

Red Tracer was trained by Chris Waller to win 15 races and over $2.3 million in prizemoney and her son has also been entrusted to the champion trainer.

Having his second trial, Overlord jumped well from the inside to lead and was held together to the line to win by a head.

Overlord is the second named foal for Red Tracer, who is yet to have a runner.
