We Can’t Wait to See – Lots 700- 880 MM 2020 – Nicks That Click

Tara Madgwick - Friday December 20

Our ‘Nicks that Click’ stories are some of the most popular on Breednet so we thought in the lead up to Magic Millions and before the majority of yearling images are uploaded we’d assess the pedigrees and see what jumps off the page as a horse we just can’t wait to see!

The following horses are selected with no consideration to vendor or type and strictly appeal from what is on the page and bring to an end Book1.

Lot 707 Filly No Nay Never (USA) x Royal Dance, by Danehill Dancer (IRE) – Coolmore

With his oldest Northern Hemisphere bred progeny about to turn four, No Nay Never has established himself as a leading young sire with 20 stakes-winners and an 11.4% stakes-winner to runner strike rate.

He is particularly successful with mares carrying Danehill blood with six of his stakes-winners bred this way including his G1 winner Ten Sovereigns, the nick working at 15.3% stakes-winners to runners. His six runners from daughters of Danehill Dancer have produced five winners.

Lot 721 Filly Fastnet Rock x Samartested, by Testa Rossa – Baramul Stud

Fastnet Rock has a good record with quality daughters of Testa Rossa with five winners from eight runners headed by G1 winner Prince Fawaz and G2 winner Anaheed.

This filly fits that profile as her dam was G2 placed and is a sibling to G1 winner Samaready, the dam of MM 2YO Classic winner Exhilarates. Foaled on July 25, you would have to be thinking 2YO for this one!

Lot 749 Filly I Am Invincible x Set to Unleash, by Reset – Yarraman Park

As a full sister to Houtzen, this is a mating with a proven track record and again highlights the success of I Am Invincible with Zabeel line mares that we have featured previously in this series.

There had been 40 winners from 47 runners bred on this nick and seven stakes-winners sired by I Am Invincible from mares carrying Zabeel including his Group I stars Viddora and Invincibella, the nick running at 14.8% stakes-winners to runners.

I Am Invincible has only had three runners from daughters of Zabeel’s undefeated son Reset and two are winners, both of them stakes-winners with Prophet’s Thumb joining Houtzen.

Lot 757 Colt Savabeel x Shandream, by Pins – Sledmere Stud

Champion New Zealand based sires Savabeel and Pins have established a powerful nick that has had plenty of exposure with 71 winners from 112 runners with 13 stakes-winners headed by G1 winners Savvy Coup and Brambles at 11.6% stakes-winners to runners.

At Karaka you will see plenty of this mix, but at the Gold Coast this colt is Robinson Crusoe.

Lot 769 Colt Into Mischief (USA)  x Shy Girl (USA), by Bernardini – Newhaven Park

Here’s an interesting horse, one of only three in the sale by Into Mischief, the Champion North American sire by earnings for 2019 that will stand at a fee of $175,000 in 2020.

Into Mischief has the perfect re cord with Bernardini mares with five to race all winners headed by current G1 placed G3 winning 3YO Owendale. Given the overall quality of the family, what’s not to like if you want to take a punt on something a little left of centre.

Lot 778 Filly Fastnet Rock x Sistine Angel, by Testa Rossa – Bhima as agent for Dorrington Farm

This filly is bred the same way as Lot 721 highlighted previously in this story with three entries in total for the sale by Fastnet Rock from Testa Rossa mares the other being Lot 682.

Her dam Sistine Angel was a very good racemare, but has yet to produce a winner at stud, although this is her first mating to Fastnet Rock, who has a great affinity with mares by Peintre Celebre, who is the sire of the grand-dam of this filly.

Fastnet Rock over Peintre Celebre mares runs at 11.6% s takes-winners to runners and has produced G1 winners Nechita and Rock Classic.

Lot 786 Filly Savabeel x Society Lady, by O’Reilly – Willow Park Stud

We’ve already mentioned the success of Savabeel over Pins mares and he is equally successful with daughters of another champion kiwi sire in O’Reilly.

82 winners from  106 starters with 13 stakes-winners headed by G1 winners Costume, Savaria, Embellish and Diademe coming at a strike rate of 12.2%.

Again you will see plenty of this at Karaka, but just one youngster bred this way at the Gold Coast.

Lot 809 Filly Shooting to Win x Starmon (NZ), by Monolith – Mill Park

This one is not so much a nick as an interesting line breeding to influential mare Cotehele House, who is the fourth dam of this filly and also the fourth dam of her sire.

You can see top class mare Verry Elleegant on the page, who has almost exactly the same pattern being by Zed, whose third dam is Cotehele House.

Line breeding to Cotehele House has been pretty successful for breeders working to a budget and looking for genetic magic. There have been 16 winners from 24 runners and five are stakes-winners coming at 20.8% stakes-winners to runners.

Lot 836 Colt Choisir x Sweetest Melody, by Encosta de Lago – Twin Hills Stud

We’ve already highlighted this nick in a previous story for Lot 170, but is worth revisiting for this colt, who is a half-brother to ill-fated Smart Melody, who probably would have been a G1 winner had her life not been cut short.

The direct cross of Choisir over daughters of Encosta de Lago runs at 18.7% stakes-winners to runners which is significantly higher than Choisir’s overall 5.6% stakes-winners to runners and has produced Group I winners Divine Prophet and Japonisme.

Lot 846 Filly Pierro x Taqaareed, by Sepoy – Coolmore Stud

The Pierro x Redoute’s Choice nick has been well documented and this filly brings that into play as her grand-dam is by Redoute’s Choice.

She’s the first foal of her dam, who is a half-sister to a stakes-winner by Pierro’s sire Lonhro in Wawail, so am more than a little intrigued by this one.

This is the last in the series that covers all of Book 1 and see the previous MM Nicks Stories below.
