Diamond Thunders Home to Win $100,000 MM Wyong Stakes

Tara Madgwick - Thursday December 12

Last seen winning the Listed ATC Sir Brian Crowley Stakes at Randwick in late October, the Mark Newnham trained three year-old Diamond Thunder booked his ticket to Magic Millions day at the Gold Coast with a brilliant win in the $100,000 Magic Millions Wyong Stakes on Thursday.

Tuned up with a recent trial, the son of Darley shuttler Dawn Approach (IRE) settled at the rear of the field for Josh Parr and when angled wide in the straight was able to round up his rivals and win the 1200m sprint by half a neck.

Happy owners! - image Steve Hart“He didn’t begin as well as he usually does, I thought he’d be up running second or third,” revealed Mark Newnham.

“He just got run off his feet, but he has a great will to win. What it did show is that when he steps up to 1400 metres at the Gold Coast he will be well suited.”

A $135,000 Magic Millions Book 2 purchase for PL Bloodstock from the Oaklands Stud draft, Diamond Thunder has won five of seven starts earning over $325,000 in prizemoney.

Diamond Thunder is the first foal of Kwinana, a winning three-quarter sister-in-blood to stakes-winner Trim (the dam of Group III winner Manicure ) and also the dam of Group I winner Gatting.

Kwinana has no yearling for the sales in 2020 but has foaled this spring producing a colt by Astern.
