Making an Impact

Tara Madgwick - Monday August 28
Sending a small select number of mares to Japanese super sire Deep Impact is starting to bear fruit for Coolmore and partners in the Northern Hemisphere with two year-old colt Saxon Warrior scoring an impressive debut victory at the Curragh on Sunday, their results no doubt of interest in Australia to Arrowfield Stud and their partners who are following a similar path.

Trained by Aidan O'Brien, Saxon Warrior strolled clear to win by three and a half lengths in a dominant display.

The colt is a full brother to stakes-placed three year-old Pavlenko and is the second winner from Group I winner and Champion 2YO Filly Maybe, who is by Galileo from a daughter of Danehill in Sumora, a three-quarter sister to Group I Epsom Oaks winner Dancing Rain.

Deep ImpactIt's the family of Group I Epsom Derby winner Dr Devious and Japanese Group I winner Suzuka Phoenix (by Sunday Silence) and our very own Australian Group I winner Awesome Rock.

"He looks a very smart colt," said Aidan O'Brien.

"He was just ready to come racing and when Donnacha (O'Brien) pulled him out he said he took off, he really quickened and was very impressive.

"He's a big powerful horse. The dam was very good. We'll try not to go too quick with him but we can do plenty, maybe even something like the Beresford."

Saxon Warrior is the fourth runner by Deep Impact to have won for O'Brien and Coolmore following on from this year's two year-old stakes-winner September (from Peeping Fawn) and her three year-old full brother Wisconsin and the previously mentioned Pavlenko, the three year-old full brother to Saxon Warrior.

Popular on the Foal Gallery last spring was this Deep Impact filly from Charming EstelleArrowfield Stud and partners sent six mares to Deep Impact in 2015 and all of them produced foals – Alinghi (filly), Alverta (filly), Charming Estelle (filly), Lucky Raquie (colt), Star Fashion (colt), You're So Good (filly).

Now yearlings, the youngsters have pleased the team at Arrowfield and are expected to make an impact!

"The two colts will be retained to race in the hope we can make a stallion for the future and the fillies will be sent to the marketplace next year," said John Messara, who declined to confirm which marketplace that might be.

Inglis Easter might seem the obvious fit, but probably worth remembering Deep Impact's sire Sunday Silence topped the 2001 Magic Millions Yearling Sale for Arrowfield when they offered subsequent Oaks winner Sunday Joy.

She was offered to dissolve the partnership between Arrowfield and her co-breeder John Singleton, who purchased the filly for $1million.

Sunday Joy has gone on to produce champion mare More Joyous, highlighting the potential future success of this current crop of Deep Impact fillies going forward.

Such was the success of the first year of sending mares to Japan to visit Deep Impact, Arrowfield decided to repeat the experiment again last year and their champion mare Miss Finland is now due to foal to Deep Impact.

Arrowfield Stud have also taken the step of making the Deep Impact blood available here in Australia for local breeders with two sons of the legendary sire now on the roster.

A Group I winner in Australia, Real Impact (Jpn) stands his second season at Arrowfield at a fee of $19,250 having covered 134 mares last year.

New to the roster is brilliant sprinter miler Mikki Isle (Jpn) (pictured below) , a dual Group I winner standing at a fee of $13,750.
