Mister Sea Wolf Captures the $1 million The Gong

Mark Smith - Saturday November 23

After Yes Yes Yes captured the $14 million The Everest and Kolding added the $8,500,000 Golden Eagle to his win in the Group 1 Epsom Handicap, the topweight Mister Sea Wolf (IRE) kept the run going for champion trainer Chris Waller when he scored a record-breaking win in the inaugural running of the $1 million The Gong (1600m) at Kembla Grange on Saturday.

Originally trained in England before moving to Ireland, Mister Sea Wolf (IRE) had 23 starts before being sent to Australia.

At his Australian debut, back in December 2017, the son of  Amadeus Wolf was just edged out by Testashadow in the Festival Stakes at Rosehill Gardens. He was placed in the Group III Newcastle Newmarket and Group III Doncaster Prelude before failing in the Group 1 Doncaster Mile at Randwick.

He has since won the Group II ATC Shannon Stakes, Group III ATC Doncaster Prelude, Listed ATC Winter Challenge and Listed HRC Rowley Mile..

“He has been a good import for us and it’s fantastic to take out the first running. We’ll be back here year in and year out,” Chris Waller’s racing manager Charlie Duckworth told Racing NSW.

“There is a reason why he was the topweight because he was the class horse in the field, he was made to carry the weight but he justified why he had the big weight.

“He is a horse that runs to a high standard from 1400m to 1800m but this looked the perfect race for him. We’re rapt to win it.

“It’s been an amazing spring. A few people probably thought we’d have a bit of a lull after Winx but Chris has proved with his systems, and with the support of all of his owners, that we can continue to be in the headlines.

“You’ve got to remember that whilst Winx was racing we had plenty of horses running second to her so with or without her we still would have won more Group Ones.”

A half-brother to Woodside Park Stud's emerging young shuttle stallion Cable Bay (IRE), the 4-time stakes-winner advances his record to 11 wins, 5 seconds and 4 thirds from 45 starts with earnings of $1,358,737.

Besides the Group II winner Cable Bay (IRE) (Invincible Spirit), Mister Sea Wolf is also a half-brother to Listed winner Yulong Yuheng (Invincible Spirit) and is one of seven winners from as many to race out of the Diktat mare Rose de France who is a half-sister to Group III winner and Group 1 placed Bowman (Irish River) out of the top-class Dancing Brave mare Cherokee Rose whose five wins include the Group 1 Prix Maurice de Gheest and Group 1 Haydock Sprint Cup.
