Gingerbread Man's Red Can Man Keeps the Family Flag Flying

Mark Smith - Sunday November 10

Without a stakes-horse under her first two dams, the Surtee filly  Brocky's Ace proved an overachiever on the track with three wins a black-type placing in the Listed WATC Gimcrack Stakes, but that was just the appetiser for her career as a broodmare.

Sold off at the dispersal of Korilya Stud at the 2014 Magic Millions Perth Winter Thoroughbred Sale for $7,000 when in foal to Oratorio (AUS), Brocky's Ace had already had three named foal including the very handy Brocky's Deal (Balestrini) but it was her weanling filly by Scandal Keeper that was to enrich the family.

That filly was sold to Justin Warwick for $10,000 at the 2015 Magic Millions Perth Yearling Sale but by the time she was back in the ring at the 2019 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale, it took Justin Fung $950,000 to take her home.Red Can Man as a yearling

That mare was Quilista who earned over $750,000 from nine wins that included the Group II ATC Sapphire Stakes Group III Birthday Card Stakes and Listed wins in the BRC Bright Shadow Hcp and Bunbury TC Rangeview Stud Classic.

Quilista was the shining light for the five winners from as many to race out of Brocky's Ace but now her 3yo son Red Can Man has joined the party.

After placing in all three runs at two, the 3yo son of Gingerbread Man took his record to three wins from four starts this season with a hard-fought win over Jericho Missile (Smart Missile) and Dig Deep (Deep Field) in Saturday’s $100,000 Ballpoint Constructions-Fairetha Stakes (1400m) at Ascot.

Trained and part-owned by Steve Wolfe, Red Can Man was purchased by Commercial Bloodstock Services P/L (FBAA) for $50,000 at the 2017 Perth Magic Millions Yearling Sale and now advances his record to 3 wins, 1 second and 2 thirds from 7 starts with earnings of $193,050.

He becomes the third stakes-winner for Yarradale Stud’s Shamardal stallion Gingerbread Man.

Brocky's Ace has a yearling filly by War Chant (USA) but missed to both War Chant (USA) and Safeguard last spring.
