Australians in Action Again on Day 2 at Tattersalls

Mark Smith - Wednesday October 30

Despite not buying in the same numbers as the opening day, Australian buyers again made their presence felt on day two of the Tattersalls Autumn Horses in Training Sale on Tuesday.

But it was Bill Dwan acting on behalf of Joseph O’Brien who saw off Australian interests to purchase the Richard Fahey trained Summer Sands for 625,000 guineas, a new record for a colt at the sale.

The winner of the Listed Redcar Two-Year-Old Trophy at his most recent start, Summer Sands was third in the Group 1 Middle Park Stakes two starts ago behind Earthlight.

Buyers had the chance to pick up Summer Sands twice previously, having been sold for just £2,000 at the 2018 Tattersalls Ascot yearling sale before bloodstock agent Matt Coleman bought the colt as a two-year-old at the spring's Tattersalls Ireland Ascot Breeze-Up Sale for £85,000.

Coleman said he believes that the son of the Oasis Dream stallion Coach House has plenty of upside.

"I think there is still plenty of improvement in him, especially as he is going to Ireland as he likes a bit of dig," he said.

That is a sentiment shared by Dwan.

"He is a gorgeous horse, scopey, and I think he has some more improvement to come next year," said Dwan. "He'll get to Ireland and have a break. He has been very well campaigned by Richard Fahey."

Dynamic Syndications / Adam Watt Bloodstock paid 50,000 gns for  Saint of Katowice (IRE) who has placed in all six of his starts this season at two for Richard Fahey.

A half-brother to four winners including the stakes-placed Nurture (Bachelor Duke) Saint of Katowice (IRE) is a son of the Redoute’s Choice stallion Elzaam out the Singspiel mare Silesian.

After purchasing the First Defence colt Price Range for 105,000 gns on the opening day SackvilleDonald / Blandford Bloodstock / Ciaron Maher Racing wen to 150,000 gns to secure the 3-time winning Mount Nelson gelding Bartholmeu Dias.

The Charlie Hills-trained gelding has been fourth in competitive handicaps at Chelmsford and Doncaster at his last two starts.

Darby Racing was also in action on the opening day paying 100,000 gns for Spirit Ridge (Ire) (Nathaniel) and they teamed up again with De Burgh Equine to sign for Ballydoyle Stables Galileo colt Harpo Marx for 60,000 gns.

This one comes with an Australian flavour as he is a son of Fastnet Rock’s Group 1 VRC Coolmore Stud Stakes winner Nechita.

Australian Bloodstock are never far from the action and they teamed up with Ronald Rauscher to pick up the former William Haggas-trained Cristal Breeze (IRE) (Gale Force Ten) for 60,000 gns.

The winner of two of his seven starts, Cristal Breeze has placed at his past three starts including a last start second over 7-furlongs at Newmarket.

He is another one with an Australian flavour to his pedigree being out of the Viking Ruler (Aus) mare Sapphire Spray (IRE).

Michael Hickmott Bloodstock wen to 70,000 gns for Cheveley Park Stud’s Mukhadram gelding Destination.

The 3yo gelding has made just five starts. After breaking his maiden over 7-furlongs at Weatherby his has finished second at his past two starts at Kempton and York.

He is a half-brother to four winners out of the stakes-winning Danehill Dancer (IRE) mare Danehill Destiny (GB).
