Juvenile Trial Watch – Rosehill

Tara Madgwick - Tuesday October 29

Three heats for juveniles at Rosehill on Tuesday morning produced some interesting horses including a Choisir colt bought by Darby Bloodstock for $240,000 at the Inglis Ready2Race Sale last week and the sibling to Golden Slipper winner She Will Reign, who has a bit to learn but is going the right way.

This was the fastest of the three heats and the Bjorn Baker trained Malkovich did everything right and bolted clear under a hold to win with ease. One of the more expensive horses sold at the Inglis Ready2Race Sale, he looks a natural racehorse and is a half-brother to four winners including Group III placed Seewhatshebrings from the family of Group I winners Rewaaya and Sense of Occasion.

He’s had two trials now for two wins having also won prior to the sale when in the care of Jean Dubois.

Some well related fillies here with the winner Cellsabeel a big strong Hinchinbrook half-sister to Group III winner and $1.5 million earner Egyptian Secret from Group I winner Egyptian Raine. At $400,000, she was the most expensive Hinchinbrook yearling sold at Inglis Easter in 2019 and obviously has ability to match her powerful good looks.

Runner-up is also a filly with a big pedigree being a half-sister to Group I ATC Golden Slipper winner She Will Reign and full sister to Group II Silver Slipper winner Time to Reign. She is trained by Gary Portelli, who trained both of her star siblings and showed marked improvement on her previous trial on October 18.

On that occasion, Still Reigning led but pulled hard all the way until running off on the turn for Rachel King and ending on the outside fence, virtually pulled up to the line to finish last. Much more tractable this time, she was able to share the lead and kept a straight course to the finish under a hold.

A homebred for Sir Owen Glenn’s Go Bloodstock, who also bred and raced his sire Criterion, Blaze a Trail was a brilliant trial winner at Randwick on October 14 and this time was given more of an education as he prepares for raceday. He was asked to settle in behind runners and then accelerate through a gap at the finish , which he did very comfortably.

Blaze a Trail is the first foal of Group III placed Bachelor Duke (GB) mare Flaming (NZ), a half-sister to Group II winner Smoulder from juvenile stakes-winner Flying Firebird.

A remarkable racehorse that contested a Golden Slipper and placed in a Melbourne Cup, four time Group I winner Criterion retired to Newgate Farm and stood his first season at a fee of $35,750, but produced just 14 live foals, so has very limited numbers to run for him this season.
