Redzel Turns Back The Clock

Mark Smith - Saturday September 7

Winless in five starts since capturing the The Everest back in October, Snitzel's remarkable son Redzel showed he is far from a spent force when turning back the challenges of the best sprinters in the land with his third consecutive win in the Group III Concorde Stakes at Randwick.

The fleet-footed 7yo gelding led every step of the way under Kerrin McEvoy to defeat the fast-finishing Pierro entire Pierata by a long-head with the 4yo Star Witness colt Graff three-quarter of a length back in third after not having a lot of room over the final 200 metres.

"It's great to see him back. He had his doubters after last preparation and he is making this race his own," McEvoy said.

"Last prep a few things went wrong, he was unlucky first-up He went to Queensland after the TJ Smith and nothing went right that day either but he got beaten fair and square.

"Peter and Paul (Snowden) put him away and started again.

"There's every chance that he is going to be a force to be reckoned with through this preparation as well."

Redzel ran the 1000 metres in 56.28, with his last 600m in 32.567s, which was just outside his own track record.

Co-trainer Paul Snowden was relieved that the 7yo gelding showed all of his old enthusiasm.

"You can't hide the excitement we have in the morning on how he's going," he told AAP.

"We have a goal and we have to get there. We have a lot of respect for the other runners. It only gets harder from now on.

"It's all about getting back to where we were. I feel that we've got him there."

A $120,000 purchase by Triple Crown Syndications from the draft of Marquee Stud at the 2014 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling sale, Redzel is the tenth live foal, seventh winner and second stakes-winner, after the Group III winner Danerich, for the former top-class Rubiton mare Millrich.

Winner of the Group III Sweet Embrace Stakes, Millrich was placed in the Group 1 Golden Slipper, Group II Silver Shadow Stakes, Group II Magic Night Stakes and Group II San Domenico Stakes.

A sister to the dam of the talented El Roca (Fastnet Rock) Millrich died three weeks after foaling Redzel.
