Burgundy filly flies home to win at Ballarat

Darryl Sherer - Tuesday July 16
A filly bred by Sir Patrick and Lady Hogan created a big impression when zooming home to score at Ballarat on Tuesday.

BurgundyThe Lindsey Smith-trained Saone came from off the pace to surge home and land the Open Maiden over 1400m on the synthetic track.

"She's a nice filly, she's only two and looking for 2000m," Smith told Racing Victoria. "She's a nice horse and she's got a good future."

"She is a really nice horse and has got a good future. She came to me from the breakers and pre-trainers in New Zealand and she has done a lot in her short life.

"We will give her a freshen-up and try and find some three-year-old races when she comes back.”

Saone is a two-year-old filly by Cambridge Stud-based Burgundy (Redoute's Choice). Winner of the Group III Cambridge Breeders' Stakes at three, Burgundy finished third in the Group I Telegraph Handicap over 1200m at Trentham the following season.

Retired to Cambridge Stud in 2013 his progeny include the New Zealand Champion Mare Dijon Bleu, winner of the Group II Sir Tristram Fillies Classic and the Group II Hawkes Bay Guineas winner Hard Merchandize.

Burgundy is advertised at $NZ6,000 at Cambridge Stud in 2019.

Inbred 3x3 to Danehill (Danzig), Saone sold for $NZ110,000 as a Karaka Premier yearling and is a half-sister to New Zealand Listed winner Respin (Power) while her fifth dam is a half-sister to Grade I Travers Stakes winner and sire General Assembly (Secretariat).
