Impressive Debut Winner Toronado

Tara Madgwick - Thursday June 27
One of the emerging sirelines highlighted in Breednet's analysis of Australian G1 races this season is that of High Chaparral (IRE), whose sire sons Dundeel and So You Think both posted Group I winners this season and it's not hard to think Swettenham Stud's Toronado (IRE) could emulate their success.

Mariamia - image Swettenham Stud twitter Racing PhotosToronado had an eye-catching debut winner at Moe on Thursday with two year-old filly Mariamia doing everything right to score a three-quarter length win in the 1017 metre maiden.

Prepared by Shane Stockdale, she sat behind the leaders for Thomas Stockdale and powered to the line to win in good style defeating well bred fillies Hummalong (a half-sister by Hallowed Crown to stakes-winner Humma Humma) and Paris (a half-sister by Snitzel to dual Group I winner English).

A modest $18,000 Inglis Premier Book II purchase from the Swettenham Stud draft for G Stellato, Mariamia was bred by Adam Sangster and is the second winner from Quinta Lago, an Encosta de Lago mare from the family of stakes-winners Chattanooga, Real Stolle and Nomothaj.

Mariamia is the fifth Australian first crop winner for Toronado, whose Australian winners are headed by brilliant colt Prince of Sussex, winner of the inaugural $1million MRC Showdown Plate.

In the Northern Hemisphere where his progeny are three year-olds, Toronado has sired seven stakes horses headed by stakes-winners Taos and Stone Toronado with his progeny really making their mark in their classic season.

A stunning looking son of proven sire of sires High Chaparral, Toronado stands this spring at Swettenham Stud at a fee of $27,500.
