One to Watch – Wangaratta

Tara Madgwick - Monday June 24
Golden Slipper winner Pierro might be renowned for his classic three year-olds, but he also gets his share of juvenile winners and we saw an impressive one on Monday at Wangaratta bred on a direct cross that has already delivered an eye opening 21% stakes-winners to runners.

Lake's Folly as a yearlingTrained by Anthony Freedman, two year-old gelding Lake’s Folly was heavily backed to be winning on debut and duly delivered with a fast finishing victory.

Ridden patiently by Clayton Douglas, Lake’s Folly settled midfield after jumping from a wide gate and when angled into the clear on straightening unleashed a powerful finish to zoom clear and win the 1170 metre maiden by an easy four and a half lengths.

Clayton Douglas was full of praise for the youngster.

"He’s a push button horse and has always shown nice ability at home,” he told Racing.com.

"He’s such a laid back horse and will get over further being by Pierro. Hopefully he can go on to bigger and better things.”

A $200,000 Inglis Easter purchase from the Bhima Thoroughbreds draft for his trainer, Lake;s Folly runs for a big group of owners headed by his breeder Jonathan Munz in whose Pinecliff Racing colours he runs.

Lake’s Folly is the first living foal from stakes-winning Redoute’s Choice mare Mama’s Choice, a daughter of stakes-winner Red Hot Mama, who is a half-sister to dual Group I winner Hollow Bullet.

PierroMama’s Choice has a yearling colt by Pierro that made $500,000 this year at Magic Millions when snapped up by James Bester Bstock/Aquis/Gelagotis Racing and has a weanling filly to follow by Written Tycoon.

Sadly for her owner, she died earlier this year when in foal to Written Tycoon again.

Pierro has achieved remarkable success when bred to daughters of champion sire Redoute’s Choice. The cross has so far produced 23 winners from 33 runners and among those winners are seven stakes-winners headed by his Group I winners Levendi and Arcadia Queen.

The cross runs at 69.7% winners to runners and 21.2% stakes-winners to runners.

Pierro stands at a fee of $88,000 at Coolmore this spring.
