The top bets from Clinton Payne for August 23

Clinton Payne - Tuesday August 22

We're heading back to Warwick Farm on Wednesday and I've found a quartet of bets I think all represent good value on a day that should produce some competitive racing.

PRESSCOTT (Warwick Farm Race 2 No 7)
This is a pretty ordinary race and this level is the peak for most of them. Prescott on the other hand indicated last time he could still have a bit of upside, coming from a long way back in an on-pace dominated 2000m race against Saturday grade opposition at Flemington. He gives the impression he'll be suited by the step up to 2200m and the small field should work in his favour. There doesn't appear to be too much pressure but at Warwick Farm they tend to get going early in the staying races and the more this becomes a test, the more it should be to Presscott's liking. He's an attractive bet at the odds in what is a thin race.

SIR BARB (Warwick Farm Race 5 No 4)
Sir Barb has got a new lease on life as a racehorse since joining the Clare Cunningham stable. He recorded two impressive wins on the bounce before venturing back to town two runs back when far from disgraced, finishing fifth in a leader dominated race behind the subsequent Saturday winner Smart Missile. Last time out Sir Barb caught the eye getting home hard behind Nat King Cu and he placed behind Special Missile in Saturday grade at Rosehill on August 12. That proves the Sir Barb form is solid for a race like this, something that can't be said for a few of his rivals that are shorter than him in the market, including the favourite Fortensky. Also have a question mark over the second favourite Argent D'or at the mile.

RED IS THE ROSE (Warwick Farm Race 6 No 12)
There's a bit of hype around I Am Serious, a former mid-north coast galloper that's having its first start for Chris Waller but I'm keen on the Victorian that comes to Sydney with Group I form references. Red Is The Rose two starts back was beaten two lengths by I Am A Star at set weights in the Kewney Stakes. She achieved that in her first campaign so it's fair to expect we're likely to see a better horse this preparation. Looked good when showing speed and strong through the line in a recent Flemington jumpout and I'm expecting her to stalk the speed here and give a good sight at more than fair odds considering the potential upside she has.

HEARTLINGS (Warwick Farm Race 7 No 12)
Throwing in an extra tip this week because I cannot believe the price of this mare, she's got genuine Saturday class ability and resumes here. Last prep she only had the one run pulling up lame in her two fore-legs but the key point to take from the run was she was $5 into $4.20. The campaign prior she resumed in a Saturday class benchmark 78 when the trainer was on record pre-race saying she was in real need of the run and that showed late when tiring on her run to finish fourth. Earlier last year she finished 2-1/2 lengths behind Ghisoni and Single Gaze at set weights which shows what she's capable of. I concede 1400m first-up off one 1050m trial could leave her vulnerable late but I'll chance the arm at the price. From barrier 4 she should get a soft run and if she's ready, she's up to this.
