One to Watch – Pakenham

Tara Madgwick - Monday June 17
A two year-old filly by Tavistock that wins her second start over 1600 metres beating older horses is a horse we want to know more about as a potential Oaks filly next season.

Pontivy is bred to be an Oaks filly next seasonTrained out of Lindsay Park by the Hayes Dabernig partnership, Pontivy was sent out favourite and surged home from midfield to win comfortably by more than a length.

It’s a long way from a Pakenham winter maiden to an Oaks, but this filly has the pedigree to be thinking that way.

A $150,000 Karaka Book One purchase for Moody Racing from the Rich Hill stud draft, Pontivy is the second winner from Belle de Jeu, a winning half-sister by Not a Single doubt to Group III winner Stripper from the family of Golden Slipper winner Belle du Jour.

Her sire Tavistock has enjoyed great success as a source of classic horses and has had particular success with mares from the Zabeel line and Pontivy’s grand-dam Miss Charmer was third in the Group III VRC St Leger and is by Zabeel, so that box is ticked.

The Tavistock x Zabeel nick runs at 72.6% winners to runners and has produced eight stakes-winners headed by Group I winners Werther, Tavago and Tarzino.
