$250,000 Dundeel Colt Tops Inglis Great Southern Weanlings Day 1

Media Release - Sunday June 16

Strong bidding throughout highlighted a competitive opening day of the 2019 Inglis Great Southern Sale.

A colt by Dundeel (ex Impossibly, pictured) sold by Glastonbury Farms and purchased by New Zealand-based Alan Fu took honours as the top lot of the day at $250,000.

$250,000 Dundeel colt from ImpossiblyGlastonbury's Duncan Grimley was thrilled with the result and the attention the colt drew.

"It's a great result for him, he's a really nice colt," Grimley said.

"Everybody on the ground was on the horse.

"It was like a feeding frenzy up there.

"There was about seven or eight on him at $200,000.

"Alan really wanted him, he had been blown out a couple of times throughout the day.

"That was his pick and away he went."

Aquis Farm also got off to an exceptional start, selling the second top lot of the day, a colt by Exceed And Excel for $240,000.

Shrewd pinhookers Steve and Ceri Jostlear of Ampulla Lodge won the bidding as the colt became the second-most expensive Exceed And Excel Weanling sold at an Inglis sale.

Their plan is to take the horse to the yearling sales in 2020.

"We had in mind to take him to Easter," Steve Jostlear said.

"He's a type that probably needs a little bit of time, he's thrown a little bit to the Zabeel.

"Nice colt, a correct colt and the sort of horse we target."

The day's trade overall saw 172 weanlings sell at an average of $34,424 with the clearance rate currently 76%.

Inglis' Victorian Bloodstock Manger Simon Vivian was pleased with the first day of the sale.

"There was outstanding competition on many lots.

"The average is currently up 41% on the sale last year, while the median has jumped 67%.

"These are significant increases on 2018, which in its own right was a strong sale.

"There are many factors in that, notably the support of the vendors and many select yearling sale-quality weanlings being offered.

"Overall it is really pleasing to see the upgraded facilities enjoyed by so many and the results in the ring that follow on."

Vivian was also looking forward to the next few days of selling.

"It is exciting to think of the opportunities to come in the next few days," Vivian said.

"280 Weanlings are in the catalogue for tomorrow and more than 300 mares for Tuesday.

"I encourage anybody interested to come to Oaklands and examine some of the quality on offer in the next few days."

Day two of the 2019 Inglis Great Southern Sale begins at 10am at Oaklands Junction tomorrow.
