Ocean Park's Kolding Too Strong in Queensland Guineas

Mark Smith - Saturday June 8

Carrying the colours made famous by star milers Rangirangdoo and Kermadec, the Chris Waller-trained Kolding will be given his chance to emulate those stars of the past following his commanding win in Saturday's Group II Ascot Green Queensland Guineas (1600m) at Eagle Farm.

It was the culmination of a 4-start winning streak for the son of Ocean Park who came with a well-timed finish under James McDonald to defeat Baccarat Baby (Casino Prince) by a half-length with Pohutukawa (Medaglia d'Oro) a long-neck back in third. (image Racing Queensland)

Kolding has been unbeatable since being gelded and his trainer has some lofty goals for him in the spring.

"I think he's the right horse to go through to the spring. He's an Epsom type of horse in my opinion," Waller said.

"Gelding this horse has really turned his form around, there is a long medical explanation as to why it has but I guess all the punters care about is he's running better.

"He's four from four since being gelded and I don't think there will be any stopping here.

"The Guineas has been a launching pad for a number of our horses over the years and hopefully this one can be another success story.

"The murmurs about the track not playing fair two weeks ago have been put to bed, they are getting a chance everywhere and James (McDonald) did a great job getting last crack at them."

Purchased by Mulcaster Bloodstock for $170,000 out of the Wentwood Grange draft at the 2017 NZB Premier Yearling Sale, Kolding advances his record to 5 wins, 1 second and 3 thirds from 11 starts with earnings of $361,150.

He becomes the third stakes-winner out of the Danzero mare Magic Star who was purchased by Kolding's breeder Warren Pegg for $34,000 at the 2008 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale.

All seven of Magic Star's foals to reach the track are winners headed by the prolific Group II winner Sampson (Dubai Destination) and the Listed winner Miss Upstart (Snippetson).

She has an unraced 2yo Iffraaj filly named Faye Presto who was purchased for $150,000 by Grahame Begg Racing / Rohan J Hughes Thoroughbred Services at Karaka last year.

Sadly, Magic Star and her Astern colt foal died last spring.

Kolding becomes the second stakes-winner for Waikato Stud's Group 1 WS Cox Plate hero Ocean Park.
