Top Producers in Demand at MM Mares

Media Release - Thursday May 30
Two of the country's top young producing mares were the stars on the Gold Coastas the third day of the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale continued its strong momentum.

Lipari was the star of the day, this morning selling to Gerry Harvey's Baramul Stud for $1.6 million. She is the second highest seller of the sale so far behind Missrock at $2.3 million.

Catalogued as Lot 1325, Lipari was presented at the auction by Twin Hills Stud in foal to leading Yarraman Park Stud sire I Am Invincible.

The mare, who is the dam of Group One Australian Derby winner Levendi and Group Three winning juvenile Marcel from Madrid, will present her new owner with a foal in early August.

"She's thrown two very good horses," a delighted Gerry Harvey said. "I think she's the best mare in the catalogue."

"I thought she was an outstanding buy and great value and I will send her back to I Am Invincible again this coming season."

The result was welcomed by Olly Tait from Twin Hills Stud, who purchased the mare before either Levendi or Marcel of Madrid had raced for $170,000.

"It's a fabulous result," Tait said. "She's a beautiful mare."

"We bought her here at Magic Millions a couple of years ago and it's been massively exciting since then owning her. Levendi actually won his first race three days after we bought her."

"She's been the best horse we've owned - it's sad to see her go, but we're in the business of selling horses."

"I'm really thrilled that Gerry bought her," Tait added. "He's a great Australian, Gerry and what he and Katie have done up here with Magic Millions is fantastic for the industry."

Harvey tried to get the day's second biggest seller, the stakes winner and emerging producer Members Joy, but lost out to Aquis Farm who went to $1.45 million to secure her from the Newgate Consignment.

The good looking grey mare's first foal is the multiple Group Two winner Pure Elation and she will produce a full relation in October.

"She's a smashing mare," Aquis' Shane McGrath said. "We loved her as an individual."

"She was a high quality racemare herself and she's in foal to the most commercial stallion we have around at the moment."

"Obviously she has already produced a high class daughter that has won some proper races. She's a cracker Pure Elation and hopefully she can produce another one like that," McGrath added.

Group One winner Miss Wilson (in foal to Zoustar) was purchased by Kia Ora Stud from Lime Country Thoroughbreds for $900,000, while it took the same amount for Mitchell Bloodstock to buy Houtzen's dam Set to Unleash later in the day from Yarraman Park Stud.

With a day still to run, the National Broodmare Sale so far has grossed almost $83 million for 567 lots sold at a healthy average price of $146,368. The clearance rate tonight sits at 78 per cent.

"The sale is tracking along nicely," Magic Millions Managing Director Barry Bowditch said. "Overall we're really pleased with where the sale is at."

"We've got a lot to look forward to tomorrow," Bowditch added."We have another 190 lots before we head into Book Two."

Day Four, the final day, of the National Broodmare Sale will commence at 10am (Qld time) tomorrow (Friday).
