The Candy Man Delivers for the Seventh Time

Mark Smith - Saturday May 25

Racing in the colours of the great Gunsynd, local hero The Candy Man made it seven wins on the trot while earning a first stakes success in Saturday's Group III Premier's Cup at Eagle Farm.

Since breaking his maiden at Doomben last December, the near white son of Casino Prince has reeled off wins at the Sunshine Coast, Doomben, Doomben, Gold Coast and the Gold Coast.

The Barry Baldwin-trained gelding has been the veterinarians best friend with two lengthy operations to mend a smashed jaw and a third on a hind leg.

"Last week we didn't want to start him in town with 62kg and we decided to go with the easier option which had him fit for today," Baldwin told AAP.

"I might have to change his name to Jack And The Beanstalk now because he just keeps climbing higher.

"I'd say this and the (2006) Stradbroke (with La Montagna) would be two of my best wins.

"This was only a Group III but it gives you a lot of satisfaction to see him put together seven wins in a row."

The 5yo gelding is expected to round out his campaign in the Group II Brisbane Cup (2400m) at Eagle Farm on June 8.

Raced by "Lucky" Pippos, whose brother, the late George Pippos was a part-owner of Gunsynd, The Candy Man advances his record to 7 wins, 2 seconds and 1 third from 11 starts with earnings of $230,600.

Purchasedout of the Murrulla Stud draft for $40,000 at the 2015 Magic Millions National Yearling Sale, The Candy Man was knocked down to his trainer for $120,000 when offered by Lyndhurst Stud Farm at the 2015 Magic Millions Gold Coast 2YOs in Training Sale.

His dam Melody (Stravinsky) was purchased by Randwick Bloodstock for $210,000 out of the Coolmore Stud draft at the 2008 Inglis Australian Easter Broodmare Sale.

A 3-time Sydney winner an placed in the Listed Angst Stakes and Listed Toy Show Quality, Melody is doing an excellent job at stud.

Four of five runners to reach the track are winners with The Candy Man's brother Phrases winning nine races including the Listed ATC Randwick City Stakes, while Motifs is a two-time winner and stakes-placed.

Now in New Zealand, Melody has a yearling colt by Proisir, which failed to make his $20,000 reserve at this year's NZB Karaka Yearling Sale and was covered in 2017 by Preferment.

The Candy Man credits his sire Casino Prince with his 17th stakes-winner.

The sire of All Too Hard stands at Vinery Stud in 2019 for the value fee of $6,600.
