Ninth Stakes Winner for Spirit Of Boom

Mark Smith - Saturday May 18

Carrying the colours made famous by her sire Spirit Of Boom, two-year-old filly Perudo took advantage of an inside barrier and a gem of a ride by Brad Stewart to edge out the fast-finishing Gem Of Scotland in Saturday's Listed Bill Carter Stakes (1200m) at Doomben.

The Tony Gollan-trained filly scored at her career debut at Toowoomba back in February before finishing second at Doomben and fourth at the Gold Coast.

Settled back fourth on the fence, Perudo drove between runners to score by a short-half-head from the hard-charging Gem Of Scotland (Rothesay) who suffered her first defeat in five starts.

Perudo's stablemate Niedorp (Not A Single Doubt) was a half-neck back in third.

"I was pretty confident she was on song for this race and when she drew the good gate I knew she would be the one to beat," Gollan told AAP.

"I had three fillies in the race with very little between them. It was just the barriers that made the difference.

"Niedorp was great. She had to sit outside the leader and if you reversed the barriers and positions in running it probably would've been the reverse result."

Perudo (pictured as a yearling ) was knocked down to Lipp Racing for $320,000 at the height of Spirit Of Boom mania at the 2018 Magic Millions March Yearling Sale.

She races in the colours of her breeder, the McApine's Eureka Stud, and is the best of four winners from five to race out of the winning Johannesburg (USA) mare Goodlookin Gambler who is a half-sister to the Group 1 VRC Emirates Stakes winner Scenic Peak (Scenic).

A full-sister to Perudo was purchased by Ciaron Maher Bloodstock for $150,000 at this year's Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

Goodlookin Gambler has a weanling colt by Spirit Of Boom and was covered by Hellbent last spring.

Perudo becomes the ninth stakes winner for Eureka Stud's Spirit Of Boom who will command a fee of $44,000 in 2019.
