Pedigree Updates Elevate May Sale

The 2019 Karaka May Sale has been boosted by a number of black-type race results since the catalogue went to print.

The catalogue features more than a dozen horses who are closely related to recent Group 1 performers.

Lot 5, an Ocean Park colt on account of Little Avondale Stud, comes from the same family as Bella Martini(Stratum), who was third in the Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m) in Adelaide earlier this month. Another close relative,Volcanic Ash(Magnus), recently won the Listed Tunku Gold Cup (1200m).

G1 winner SprightCambria Park are offering a Turn Me Loose colt (Lot 9) who comes from the same family as quality American three-year-old Tacitus(Tapit), who was third in the Kentucky Derby (2000m) after winning the Grade 2 Wood Memorial (1800m). No fewer than four other members of this family have either won or placed at stakes level since the catalogue went to print.

Lot 55 is from the same family as Spright (Hinchinbrook), who won the Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m) after finishing second in the Group 1 William Reid Stakes (1200m). The Telperion filly will be offered on account of Archer Park. The El Roca filly (Lot 160) is closely related toDothraki(Mossman), who was fourth in the William Reid and will be presented in the yearling session by S.M. Hayden.

The Burgundy colt from the draft of Windsor Park Stud (Lot 65) comes from the same family as the boom sprinter Classique Legend(Not a Single Doubt), who recently won the A$500,000 Group 2 Arrowfield 3YO Sprint (1200m) in Sydney. The dam of Lot 65 is also a sibling toSleeping Beauty(NZ) (Rip Van Winkle), who won last weekend's Group 3 Rotorua Stakes (1400m).

The broodmare Gold Cape(Cape Cross) (Lot 185), is closely related to the two-year-old filly Tweet(Midshipman) – a recent winner of the Group 1 Cidade Jardim G.P. Joao Cecilio Ferraz (1500m) and the Group 2 Cidade Jardim G.P. Presidente Guilherme Ellis (1500m).

Inzabeel(NZ) (Sir Tristram) (Lot 189) is a relative of the exciting mareRondinella(NZ) (Ocean Park). Already Group 1-placed in the New Zealand Stakes, she competed with distinction during the Sydney autumn carnival with a third in the Group 1 Tancred Stakes (2400m) and fourth in the Sydney Cup (3200m). Another relative,Celebrity Dream(NZ) (Thorn Park), recently scored the sixth stakes win of her career in the Listed Sheila Gwynne Classic (1400m).

Two broodmares in the catalogue –Operavega(NZ) (Stravinsky) (Lot 204) and Vegas Dancer(NZ) (Stravinsky) (Lot 229) are closely related to the champion mare Winx(Street Cry). She ended her record-breaking career with two final Group 1 victories in the George Ryder Stakes (1500m) and Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m), winning a total of 25 Group 1 races.

Opus Four(NZ) (Stravinsky) (Lot 205) is from the same family as Mopotism(Uncle Mo), a recent fourth placegetter in the Grade 1 La Troienne Stakes (1700m) at Churchill Downs.

The Zabeel marePomellato(NZ) (Lot 209), boasts a number of black-type pedigree updates. The biggest ones come from her relativeVerry Elleegant(NZ) (Zed), who recorded a superb Sydney autumn Group 1 double in the Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) and Australian Oaks (2000m).

Fiscal Fantasy(Skilled) also won the Group 3 Manawatu Breeders' Stakes (2000m),Zabay(NZ) (Stravinsky) placed in the Group 3 South Island Thoroughbred Breeders' Stakes (1600m), andBrooklyn Bay(NZ) (Sufficient) placed in the Listed Macau Director's Cup (1500m).

Treasure the Cross(Cape Cross) (Lot 225) is closely related toHunting Horn(Camelot), a recent fourth placegetter in the Group 1 Dubai Sheema Classic (2400m).

Meanwhile, another four of the lots in the catalogue are half or full-siblings to recent big-race performers.

Lot 156is a half-brother toPrincess Kereru(NZ) (Pins), who added the Listed NZB Finance Sprint (1200m) at Hastings to a highly successful season that previously included the Group 3 Waikato Stud Plate (1200m) and a placing in the Group 1 Sistema Railway (1200m). The yearling colt by Shocking will be offered on account of Te Runga Stud.

There are two half-siblings toThe Lord Mayor(NZ) (Rock 'n' Pop), whose strong recent form includes victories in the A$150,000 Toowoomba Cup (2000m) and the A$125,000 Gold Coast Cup (2400m). Ardsley Stud'sLot 86is a weanling half-sister by Iffraaj, whileLot 164is a yearling half-brother by Showcasing.

Lot 197, the Darci Brahma mareMarshal(NZ), is a full-sister to the recent Group 3 Canterbury Gold Cup (2000m) placegetterDee and Gee(NZ). Earlier this season, Dee And Gee won the Listed Metropolitan Trophy (2500m), finished second in the Group 3 Wellington Cup (3200m) and fourth in the Group 1 Auckland Cup (3200m).

The yearling session at the Karaka May Sale is your last opportunity in 2019 to secure a yearling eligible to enter the lucrative Karaka Million Series.

The May Sale catalogue has been streamlined into one day of selling on Friday 17 May with Lot 1 going under the hammer at 10am, following the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Racing RT Hon Winston Peters address at 9.45am.
