King of the Kids Title Up for Grabs

Tara Madgwick - Monday May 6
If you listen to stud propaganda at this time of year you will realise that 'two year-old speed' seems to be a recurring phrase, so therefore the leading sire of two year-olds is a race that must hold serious interest for everyone in the bloodstock industry and this year the title could go to any one of probably five contenders.

Usually by the time we head to Brisbane for the Winter Carnival, the 2YO Sires List is all but decided following the big Triple Crown races in Sydney during the autumn, but this year with no dominant two year-old sweeping the field it's a close run race with five stallions all siring the winners of $2million or more.

Usually a Golden Slipper winner delivers the Champion 2YO Sire Title to their sire, but Kiamichi's sire Sidestep (Telemon Thoroughbreds for Darley) is unlikely to take the crown this year given the intense competition he faces from I Am Invincible and Snitzel, who have already overtaken him and hold the top two places on the list.

I Am InvincibleI Am Invincible went out hard at the start of the season with all guns blazing, but as we move into the business end of proceedings Snitzel is hitting top gear and has had a flurry of two year-old winners in the past week.

Snitzel has been Champion 2YO Sire for the past two seasons and is always the horse to beat.

They are now 16 all in terms of winners with I Am Invincible's six juvenile stakes-winners the most of any sire.

Darley duo Exceed and Excel and Lonhro are the other two sires with more than $2million in earnings and both are previous winners of the Champion 2YO Sire title.

Every sire that has juvenile progeny earnings of $1million or more is available to Australian breeders this spring and the list is topped by I Am Invincible (Yarraman Park $247,500 ) and Snitzel (Arrowfield Stud ($220,000) – the two most expensive sires in the country….. turns out that phrase 'two year-old speed' does indeed have a massive bearing on the commercial success of a sire.
