Denman's Humma Humma Breaks The Ice

Mark Smith - Sunday April 14

The stars aligned for perennial bridesmaid Humma Humma in Saturday's Listed Redelva Stakes (1100m) at Morphettville.

Six-times stakes-placed, Humma Humma sat outside the leader Gotta Be Gold before Beau Mertens pressed the button at the 300 metres.

The John McArdle-trained daughter of Denman stuck to her guns in the final 100 metres to hold the challenge of Behemoth (All Too Hard) by a short-head with the favourite Anjana (Sepoy) a half-length back in third.

"She probably deserved a stakes win. I think she has been seven times stakes-placed and just missed to Sunlight (in the Gr III Thoroughbred Club Stakes at Caulfield)," McArdle said.

"We were a little bit worries coming to the 1100 metres today. We freshened her up after the run in Sydney (Listed Fireball Stakes at Randwick) and she probably came here a bit heavier than normal.

"I told Beau to box seat but he was going have to fight her to do that so he did the right thing and sat outside the leader and she gave a kick but was on tired legs late but she will improve a lot of that.

McArdle said he will bring Humma Humma back for either the Sangster Stakes or Euclase Stakes.

The 3yo daughter of Denman advances her record to 3 wins, 4 seconds and 2 thirds from 12 starts with earnings of $271,255.

An $80,000 purchase by Redgum Racing out of the Flinders Park Stud draft at the 2017 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale, Humma Humma (pictured as a yearling) is the best of two winners from three to race out of the Melbourne winning Bel Esprit mare Humma Mumma who is a half-sister to Listed winner Vignette (Spectrum).

Mc Ardle purchased Humma Humma's half-sister by Hallowed Crown, named Hummalong, for $100,000 at the 2018 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale.

Humma Mumma has a filly foal by Capitalist and was covered by Zoustar last spring.

Humma Humma becomes the 14th stakes-winner for Darley Stud's Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes winner Denman.
