Racing wide from the start, Vega Magic was third to the home turn as Lord Da Vinci set the speed. Ridden clear 200m out by Damien Oliver, Vega Magic ($2.70 fav) stayed on strongly to hold the late rally from Japanese import Brave Smash ($3.40) to score by a long neck.

Having won the first two races with Hell Or Highwater and Sullivan Bay, Lindsay Park was also on the mark with Formality at Randwick however, co-trainer David Hayes said the win of Vega Magic gave him great pleasure.

"That's a massive effort to win and give the second horse all that weight (six kilograms), " Hayes, who trains Vega Magic in partnership with son Ben and nephew Tom Dabernig, said.

"It's been a fantastic day but this horse was terrific - he didn't get many favours from the wide gate and with the 60 kilos.

"He got attacked late by a proper horse from Japan so it was a good effort."

Vega Magic was racing first-up since winning the Group I Goodwood Handicap over 1200m at Morphettville in May at his first start for the stable since arriving from Perth.

Hayes said he is optimistic about obtaining a slot in the $10m Everest at Randwick in October with the five-year-old

"He'll go to the Memsie next - he's won over 1400m at weight-for-age in Perth - and then we'll freshen him up and aim at the Everest.

"I think he'll run huge in the Memsie and then get snapped up for the big race in Sydney. We'll dangle carrots everywhere to get him there."

Oliver was full of praise for Vega Magic.

"It was a good effort out there on his own and carrying the big weight," Oliver said.

"The second horse really challenged him inside the final furlong but he held him off well. I could feel him coming and my bloke was just waiting a little bit but when i got stuck into him he really responded."

Santa Ana Lane ($15) ran on well in the home straight to finish third, beaten 4 1/2-lengths.
