Domesday's Oregon's Day Closing in on a Million

Mark Smith - Saturday March 2

Narrowly beaten in the Group III Frances Tressady Stakes (1400m) at Flemington 12 months ago, Oregon's Day avenged that defeat with a thoroughly game performance on Saturday, which edges her closer to the magical $1 million in earnings.

The 5yo daughter of Domesday was there to be beaten at the 200 metres but she kept fighting on to defeat the favourite Clarice Cliffs (Canford Cliffs) by a neck with the 3yo filly Aristia (Lonhro) a length back in third. (images Grant Courtney).

It was the second stakes win on the day for Mick Price and Damien Oliver after She's So High (I Am Invincible) scored an impressive win in the Listed Bob Hoysted Handicap.

A 4-time stakes winner, including the Group II Hollindale Stakes at the Gold Coast, Orgon's Day may be running out of time to capture the elusive Group 1 but Price is not going to die wondering. Oregon's Day will head to Sydney for the Group 1 Coolmore Classic at Rosehill on March 16 and the Coolmore Legacy at Randwick the following month.

"We'll now go to Sydney and get the softer tracks," Price said.

"She's been a length or two off winning a Group 1 four or five times.

"She's a class mare and I'm hoping she can fluke a Group 1, one of these days.

"You can say beautiful ride but the seas parted and he made full use of the run.

"She did no work and was too good at the end.

"We were looking for a nice third or fourth so it's great to get a win in a Group III race and she's now not far off winning $1 million prize money."

Oregon's Dream was retained to race by her breeders, which includes Paul Girolami who also raced her dam Oregon Seal, a Group III winner up to 2100 metres for former top jockey Bob Skelton.

Girolami said Oregon Seal was "the smallest thoroughbred racing in Australia, she was a midget but she had a terrific ticker."

Retired from stud duties, Oregon Seal has produced eight winners from eight foals to race with Oregon's Day her third stakes-winner joining Group II winner Talent Show and stakes-winner Oregon Spirit.
