One to Watch – Hawkesbury

Tara Madgwick - Thursday February 21
A two year-old half-brother by Snitzel to world champion sprinter and successful sire Starspangledbanner was always going to be an obvious pick as the ‘One to Watch’ from Hawkesbury on Thursday.

AussieThird to Dawn Passage when making his debut on Australia Day at Randwick and then fifth in the Group III MRC Blue Diamond Prelude to I Am Immortal, Aussie always looked to have a class edge on a maiden field over 1000 metres and so it played out.

Prepared by Peter and Paul Sowden, Aussie led throughout and despite being wayward at the finish as he drifted out, was still too classy in scoring a dominant three-quarter length win.

Aussie carries the James Harron Bloodstock colours and runs for a big syndicate of his clients with the colt’s breeder Tony Santic of Makybe retaining a share in the ownership.

Aussie is the tenth winner from 11 foals to race from stakes-placed Gold Anthem, who is also the grand-dam of Group I MRC Thousand Guineas winner Amicus.

Turning 20 this year, Gold Anthem has been a remarkable producer for Makybe delivering a foal in every season she has been to stud.

Lime Country Thoroughbreds as agent for Makybe will offer her current yearling, a colt by Not a Single Doubt , at Inglis Easter as Lot 31.

Gold Anthem has a weanling filly by Written Tycoon and was covered last spring by Aussie’s sire Snitzel.
