Juvenile Trial Watch – Randwick

Tara Madgwick - Monday February 18
Multiple Group I winning stallion Trapeze Artist was the obvious star at the Randwick trials on Monday morning with a dominant win, but there were also some interesting two year-olds in action including a couple of seven figure Magic Millions purchases with Golden Slipper aspirations.

Evening Slippers was the most expensive yearling filly sold in Australia in 2018 Purchased for $1.8 million from the Arrowfield draft by Reg Inglis/Jon Kelly/Paul Frampton, the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott trained Snitzel filly Evening Slippers was the most expensive filly sold in Australia in 2018.

She is a full sister to the former Waterhouse trained favourite Sweet Idea, who won over $2.4 million in prizemoney and placed in the Golden Slipper and Magic Millions 2YO Classic before training on later in her career to win the Group I ATC The Galaxy.

Evening Slippers was third on debut last year behind promising colt Time to Reign and was having her second trial this preparation when stepping out over 1045 metres.

She jumped fast and led easily for Tim Clark and coasted to the line under a hold to win by half a length on the line eased down.

Evening Slippers runs for an ownership group that includes her breeders Arrowfield Stud and Katsumi Yoshida. Her dam Flidais has no yearling for the sales this year, but did produce a Snitzel colt last spring and is back in foal again to the champion sire.

Rome as a yearlingPierro colt Rome was a $1,050,000 Magic Millions purchase for James Harron Bloodstock from the Bhima Thoroughbreds draft and was fourth in the Group III ATC Breeders Plate in the spring before being sent to Queensland for a crack at the Magic Millions 2YO Classic.

He finished second to Sun City at his only start in the Group III BRC BJ McLachlan Stakes which was not enough prizemoney to get him into the MM race, a disappointment at the time, but one that now may prove a blessing in disguise.

Rome travelled off the pace and steamed home under a hold to win his 740 metre trial by a short neck over his stablemate I Am Invincible colt Enforcement.

Turning in an eye-catching trial for third was the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott trained So You Think colt Just Thinkin’ a three-quarter brother to Group III winners Stampede and Thinkin’ Big, who was so impressive during the spring and now sold to Hong Kong. This colt is raw and green, but he looks to have every bit as much promise as his siblings.

Other two year-old winners were Kiamichi (Sidestep), Sally’s Day (More Than Ready (USA) and Strasbourg (I Am Invincible).
