Juvenile Trial Watch – Randwick

Tara Madgwick - Thursday February 7
A big set of 17 trials at Randwick on Thursday featured some of the potential autumn big guns with $6million earner Happy Clapper winning his heat and the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott stable tasting success with the top priced colt and filly from Magic Millions 2018.

Faretti lights up the sale ringPurchased for $2million from the Yarraman Park draft by Reg Inglis/Jon Kelly/Paul Frampton, I Am Invincible colt Faretti was the sale-topper at the Gold Coast and looked good in winning his 735 metre heat in 43.12 seconds which was the quickest of four two year old heats run at this distance.

Ridden by James McDonald, who partnered him at his previous trial win last month, Faretti was ridden a little more quietly from the gate this time to settle in the field and when angled into clear running at the top of the straight surged to the line under a hold to win with authority.

Raced by a partnership that includes Yarraman Park, Faretti is the second foal of stakes-winning Magic Albert mare Tai Tai Tess, a grand-daughter of dual Group I winning filly Arborea, the darling of the 1993 Melbourne Spring Carnival where she won both the Group I VATC Thousand Guineas and VRC Oaks.

Yarraman Park sold the current yearling from Tai Tai Tess, another colt by I Am Invincible, at Magic Millions this year for $1.3 million to Waller Racing/ Mulcaster Bloodstock.

Tai Tai Tess has another I Am Invincible colt to follow and is back in foal again to the champion sire.

Evening Slippers was the most expensive yearling filly sold in Australia in 2018 Purchased for $1.8 million from the Arrowfield draft by the same partnership that bought Faretti, two year-old Snitzel filly Evening Slippers is a full sister to the former Waterhouse trained favourite Sweet Idea, who won over $2.4 million in prizemoney and placed in the Golden Slipper and Magic Millions 2YO Classic before training on later in her career to win the Group I ATC The Galaxy.

Evening Slippers was third on debut last year behind promising colt Time to Reign and was having her first public gallop since that outing.

She jumped fast from an outside gate for Tim Clark and despite travelling deep throughout was super strong to the line, pulling her way clear to win by nearly three lengths in 43.35 seconds.

Evening Slippers runs for an ownership group that includes her breeders Arrowfield Stud and Katsumi Yoshida.

Her dam Flidais has no yearling for the sales this year, but did produce a Snitzel colt last spring and is back in foal again to the champion sire.

Both Faretti and Evening Slippers are among the second acceptors for the Golden Slipper and in fact are the two most expensive youngsters still in contention.

Other two year-old winners were Dresden Green (Snitzel), Mesmer (Sepoy), Classic Gown (Fastnet Rock) and Coast (Delago Deluxe).
