Toronado On The Board

Mark Smith - Friday February 1

Swettenham Stud's striking High Chaparral IRE) stallion Toronado (IRE) is off the mark in Australia when the Paul Messara-trained Powertrain made an impressive career debut over (1100m) at Scone on Thursday.

There were hopes that Matt Laurie's highly regarded Prince Of Sussex would make it a double on the day for Toronado (IRE) when he made his debut at Pakenham. But after showing speed to take up the running the odds-on favourite raced greenly in the closing stages to finish a close up fourth behind the Dissident colt Outlandos.

Ashley Morgan made full use of Powertrain's inside barrier to push through and lead but he came under extreme pressure from the I Am Invincible colt Vici who looked to put a neck on Powertrain at the 200 metres before the Toronado gelding rallied to win by a neck with Deviate (Not A Single Doubt) two and a quarter lengths back in third.

Powertrain (pictured above as a yearling ) carries the colours of Arrowfield Stud after failing to make his $100,000 reserve at the 2018 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

He is the first foal of the Not A Single Doubt mare Push And Shove who has a colt by Dundeel in the Arrowfield Stud draft at the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale. (Lot 620). (pictured right)

Group 1 Sussex Stakes and Group 1 Princess Anne Stakes winner Toronado (IRE) covered 166 mares at Swettenham Stud last spring at a fee of $22,000.
