First Runner a Winner for Hvasstan

Mark Smith - Monday January 28

With just 15 foals in his first crop, the Fastnet Rock stallion Hvasstan has beaten many stallions with ten times that amount to the punch by siring his first winner from his first runner at Beaudesert on Monday.

Under a rail-hugging ride by Nozi Tomizawa, the Ben Currie-trained colt Jelviss defeated Emotive Mountain by one and a half-lengths with Stryking Princess a half-length back in third.

The Gleeson family homebred is the first winner for the Jet Spur mare Big Jet Plane, a $13,000 yearling, who won three of her six starts.

After beginning his stud career in Queensland the former Manny Gelagotis-trained stable star Hvasstan moved to Steve Hoare's Rivercrest Park Stud in Western Australia where he covered just 11 mares last spring at a bargain basement fee of $1,100.
