First Group 1 Winner for Dundeel

Mark Smith - Sunday January 27

Arrowfield Stud's Dundeel sired his first Group 1 winner with the Mick De Kock-trained Atyaab in Saturday's Cape Derby (2000m) at Kenilworth.

Settled well back in the field, Atyaab came with a barnstorming finish to defeat Charles (Trippi) by a neck with Herodotus (Trippi) a further two and a quarter lengths away in third.

It was also a first Group 1 win for jockey Diego De Gouveia who had been on the son of Dundeel when he won over 2000 metres at Turffontein on December 22 and again when runner-up at his most recent start in the Listed Sea Cottage Stakes over 1800 metres on the same track on January 6.

Atyaab advances his overall record to three wins, one second and two thirds from seven starts.

De Kock believes Atyaab is looking for 2400 metres and the South African Derby (2450m).

He sports the silks of Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid al Maktoum, who also owned the 2015 Cape Derby winner Ertijaal, an Australian-bred son of Hard Spun (USA) out of Jeune's daughter Alharir.

A $260,000 Inglis Easter purchase for Shadwell from the Arrowfield Stud draft, Atyaab (pictured as a yearling ) hails from the first crop of High Chaparral's champion son Dundeel.

A half-brother to stakes-winner Vesper (Zabeel), Atyaab is the eighth foal and the fifth winner from the crack racemare Sylvaner.

A daughter of Danasinga, Sylvaner's nine wins were highlighted by the Group II Sunline Stakes at Moonee Valley and two runnings of the Group II Marsh Classic at Morphettville.

A full-sister to Atyaab was sold for $100,000 to The Bulla Thoroughbreds Trust at the 2018 Easter Yearling Sale.

After missing to Dundeel in 2016, Sylvaner foaled a colt by the six-time Group 1 winner and was covered by him again last spring.
