First Stakes Winner for Glass Harmonium

Mark Smith - Thursday January 24

The purchase by Mandy Gunn of the unraced Golden Snake (USA) mare Hissy Missy for just $1,000 at the 2013 August Thoroughbred Sale looks an inspired decision following Glass Warrior's barnstorming win in Wednesday's $100,000 Listed Launceston Guineas (2100m) at Mowbray on Wednesday.

The John Blacker-trained filly came from second last under Siggy Carr to take control on the point of the turn to put upwards of five lengths on her six overmatched opponents and in the process credit Blue Gum Farm Glass Harmonium (IRE) with his first stakes-winner.

It was just the fifth start for Glass Warrior who was coming off a one and a half-length win in a 1650 metre maiden at Devonport.

"She was the only stayer in the race," Blacker told The Examiner.

"Even when she was racing over 1200m and 1400m she was always flashing home and I thought she'd stay all day.

"It wasn't the strongest field, but the margin was good."

Blacker said the Tasmanian Oaks was the filly's ultimate goal and was toying with the idea of taking on the males again in the Tasmanian Derby.

"She can't run in both the Derby and the Strutt so we'll pick the one that suits her best before going on to the Oaks which is her main target," Blacker said.

Raced by a large group that includes her breeder and trainer, Glass Warrior is the second winner from three to race out of Hissy Missy who is a daughter of the talented racemare Viennetta (Ark Regal).

She comes from the second crop of 26 live foals by the Group 1 Mackinnon Stakes winner Glass Harmonium (IRE).

The handsome grey son of Verglas had just six live foals in his first crop.

Hissy Missy has an unnamed 2yo gelding by Needs Further and was bred back to Glass Harmonium (IRE) last spring having not been served the previous season.

Glass Harmonium (IRE) covered 15 mares at Blue Gum Farm last spring at a fee of $5,500.
