Bergerac Shocks in Bernborough Quality

Mark Smith - Saturday December 29

The least fancied of Steve Tregea's three runners, the 5yo gelding Bergerac pulled off a 30/1 shock in Saturday's Listed Bernborough Quality (1600m) at Doomben.

Michael Murphy made full use of an inside barrier having the son of Drumbeats travelling sweetly third on the fence then easing him off the heels of Kay Kay Boy in the straight to go on and win by one and a quarter lengths from Honey Toast (Redoute's Choice) with Bluebrook (Hinchinbrook) a short-neck back in third. "I said to Michael when I legged him on he is by no means the third string, he's a very nice horse and we have a good opinion of him," Tregea said.

The trainer indicated that Bergerac will be set for the Sunshine Coast Cup (1400m) on January 26.

With his first stakes win, Bergerac advances his record to 8 wins, 3 seconds and 2 thirds from 22 starts with earnings of $422,450.

A homebred for Tregea's Windemere Stud, Bergerac is a half-brother to the Listed winners Cheyenne Warrior (Not A Single Doubt) and Ardrossan Redoute's Choice) out of the Iglesia mare Miss Argyle who Windemere had purchased for $270,000 at the 2008 Magic Millions Gold Coast August Thoroughbred Sale.

Runner-up in the Listed AJC Gimcrack Stakes, Miss Argyle is a sister to the prolific winner Diamondsondinside whose 15 wins included a pair of Listed stakes wins, and to the dam of the Group II Queensland Guineas winner Express Air (Piccolo).

Miss Argyle has an unraced 2yo gelding by Shamus Award and a yearling gelding by Golden Archer. She foaled a filly by Whittington on October 28.

Bergerac becomes the second stakes-winner for Lyndhurst Stud Farm's Redoute's Choice stallion Drumbeats.
