Hold The Phone - Better Reflection Makes it Two Stakes Winners for Better Than Ready

Mark Smith - Saturday December 15

Forty minutes after siring his first stakes-winner, The Odyssey in the Listed Phelan Ready Plate, Lyndhurst Stud's high-flying Better Than Ready had a second stakes-winner when Better Reflection made the trip down from Rockhampton to claim the Listed Calaway Gal Stakes at Doomben.

A debut winner on her home track back on November 9, the John Wiggington-trained filly defeated Boomstress (Spirit Of Boom) by one and a half lengths with the favourite Single Blonde (Not A Single Doubt) a short-neck back in third.

Wiggington said Better Reflection would not start again before the Magic Millions 2yo Classic at the Gold Coast on January 12.

"I don't want to overtax her. She had to do it tough today as she was trapped wide for the entire race from her bad barrier but she has run faster time than the colts," Wiggington told AAP.

"We knew we had something smart when she won a trial and then she won the Breeders in Rockhampton by a big margin and we were confident we could take on city class."

A $20,000 purchase by her trainer out of the Yarramalong Park draft at the Magic Millions Gold Coast March Yearling Sale, Better Reflection (pictured as a yearling ) is the best of five winners from as many to race out of the unraced Canny Lad mare Miraposa who is a granddaughter of the outstanding American mare Grecian Flight (Cormorant) whose 21 wins included the Grade 1 Acorn Stakes.

After slipping to Better Than Ready in 2016, Miraposa foaled a filly by the Redoute's Choice stallion Killy on October 10.

Better Than Ready has made a Spirit Of Boom-like start to his stud career.

The 4-time stakes-winning son of More Than Ready stands at Lyndhurst Stud at a fee of $9,900.
